Lay down arms, cultivate letters; the Purple Star shines bright. A common man bears responsibility, one word makes him sovereign. No king, no emperor, yet he settles the world—the first to come from the fields.

Strange arts slay without a blade; lay down arms and the sun and moon rise high. Sages of three faiths dwell together—how can demons escape? The sage star appears in the south; from the fields a new Washington arises. This one is the Purple Star; holding the middle, he settles the realm.

The Daoist said: All quarters support the true lord; purple radiance shines upon the earth. Asked where the Purple Star descends: it rises in Yin-Mao (Guangdong), travels in Chen-Si (America).

To rescue from peril and save from suffering—this is the Sage alone. Yang returns and governs; when darkness reaches its utmost, light is born. The coming age: when calamity reaches its peak, the Sage appears.

He is neither monk nor priest; the True Buddha dwells not in temples. He holds Maitreya's primal teaching. The coming teacher descends—not in mansions or palaces, but in a humble cottage, scattering gold.

The world divides in three; a sage emerges—black-haired, dragon-robed. Heaven and earth regain their light; all creation is set in order. The four seas sing his praise; all dwell beneath his blessing.

The land changes its hue; when red blossoms fade, white blossoms bloom. From Purple Mountain a beauty comes—from across the sea (America).

An Eastern man leaves his homeland (China), crossing the Apennines to France (truly the Statue of Liberty in America). He crosses sky, sea, and ice, awakening the world with his divine staff.

He tarries long in Europe (America), unable to return, yet he shall go back to Asia. From great Hermes he comes; he will surpass all the kings of the East.

To know the sage's surname: one timber joined to a mouth and a nail (Wang); to know his given name: three men share two hands (Tian). His name not yet revealed—after Yin and Mao it shall be.

A dragon once in a hundred years, a phoenix once in a hundred years. The dragon lies dormant at Spirit Mountain, the phoenix hides by the Li waters. His surname swallows the world, his given name touches the sovereign. In his years of study, heaven’s signs temper his will. He shall surely rule the Central Land, his might shaking all ages. The prophecy poem comes down two thousand years, unfolding the sage’s very name. A great forest holds many birds for all to behold—“the surname swallows the world” holds its meaning within. To unify all under heaven is the imperial view; eternal and unchanging. He should have been but a farmer by the field’s edge—yet seven stars accompany the one from the fields. Born into a world in chaotic turmoil, the cyclical signs disordered and jumbled. The handle of the Dipper is used to fix the meridian; the lunar calendar is consulted for his emergence. One must read closely the Qimen Dunjia: how the Tai Chong Heavenly Horse runs. The seven stars of the Northern Dipper are the ruling stars; the nine stars of Qimen are their other names. Seven stars revolve around the sovereign star; dragon and serpent coil the spirit turtle. This marks the sage as counselor-minister—aiding the sovereign to turn the cosmos. When shall the sage emerge? Look to the ninth and tenth months of winter. Then the gates of heaven stand wide, and all creation welcomes the sage. The sage’s primordial spirit is refined whole; he attains the void and returns to the Origin of Heaven. All things begin and are governed by Heaven; Maitreya Buddha descends among mortals. The dragon-sage, following Heaven, ascends the purple hall; his grand design turns the cosmos. Only thus does the Central Land gain its master; shaking off corruption, it leaves the vulgar behind. System and thought are wholly transformed; sun and moon grace the sky over China. The cosmos shines bright upon the world; a new age of Great Harmony opens. Dragon and phoenix in auspicious accord, yin and yang turn; sun and moon grace the sky with omens. The sage suffered hardship in his studies; learned and many-talented, he can commune with Heaven.

The Jade Mountain Lad speaks of the mystic—each word and line has its appointed time. To know the sage's true origin, look but to the season of Hare and Dragon. His surname and name: beside the timber stands a single peak, made clear of itself. Under heaven two parts suffer, yet the Central Land alone is at peace. When chaos first parts sun and moon, the Purple Star shines and settles the realm. A son from the fields whom all revere; all beneath heaven turns its heart toward him. Lay down arms, cultivate letters, and the world is governed; rivers run clear, seas grow calm, and prosperity reigns. Sages of three faiths dwell together; every nation and isle bows to the sage's light. Who grasps the meaning, wealth and honor follow to this day; who decodes the mystic through and through, is the first of Penglai.
